Dr. Jo Gjertson Frederiksen earned her doctorate in Art and Art Education from Columbia University Teachers College, with an expertise in early aesthetic movement and artistic development in dance. She has been on the faculty of Wayne State University, Oakland University, Oakland Community College, and a visiting guest artist at Albion College, St. John's University, Fordham University, TCCU. She also led the Dance Program and chaired the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Woodmere Academy.
Dr. Frederiksen received her MFA in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College and a BA in Geology and Environmental Science from Gustavus Adolphus College. Jo has danced professionally with Cherry Creek Theatre, Big Wave/NYC, Detroit Dance Collective, Sullivan Dance Project, and numerous original performance dance/music/art collaborations. She trained in Limon, Currier, and Cunningham techniques, and specializes in integrated performance art works connecting dance, music, literature, and the visual arts. For over 20 years, Dr. Frederiksen has been Director and Lead Teaching -Artist with Education In Dance and The Related Arts in NYC, which brings a dance/music/arts enrichment program into schools and shelters for underserved populations, aged two years through adults. |
